Start/Sit Week 6 Quarterbacks and Running Backs

Quarterbacks to Start

1) Eli Manning vs. @PHI

In his last 6 matches against the Eagles, Manning has thrown for 14 touchdown passes. The Giants offense have actually developed a few different options for Eli in the passing game with Reuben Randle and Larry Donnell being red zone targets. Victor Cruz and Odell Beckham Jr. are also big play candidates who can find their way into the end zone. I like Eli’s chances of scoring, and the Eagles offense is no slouch either, so the game should be close till the end.

2) Kirk Cousins vs. @ARI

After his game against the Seahawks, you can thrown that Thursday night game against the Giants away. In 3 of his 4 starts, he has scored over 18 fantasy points and Arizona has given up 20 or more points to 3 of the 4 quarterbacks they have faced this season.

3) Carson Palmer vs. WSH

With Drew Brees on a bye, Palmer is another veteran option that you may have been able to pick up. Reports have been good after his treatment and the match up is great as Washington has allowed 26 points or more to the last three quarterbacks they have faced (Nick Foles, Eli Manning, Russell Wilson).

1) Cam Newton vs. @CIN

If Cam Newton can’t run, then he isn’t the same Cam Newton that has been fantasy relevant for the first three years of his career. The Bengals have also held quarterbacks Joe Flacco, Matt Ryan, and Jake Locker to under 20 fantasy points until Tom Brady had a great game against them last week. That was in Tom Brady’s backyard and this game is in Cincinnati. The Bengals will look to redeem themselves as many people were talking about them being one of the best teams before facing the Pats.

2) Tony Romo vs. @SEA

Going on the road to Seattle is the hardest place for an NFL team to to win these days. In fantasy, it is not about if Romo can win, but if he will get enough points for your team. Other quarterbacks who have gone into Seattle have been Aaron Rodgers and Peyton Manning. Manning fared well, but most of that came late in the game. In the first half, he looked like the Manning that lost the Superbowl. Then he realized he was Peyton Manning and got back to doing what he does best. Aaron Rodgers was not so lucky in week 1 and was held to 1 touchdown and under 200 passing yards while throwing 1 interception.

3) Austin Davis vs. SF

Had a good game last week against the Eagles, but it was the Eagles. Davis is being thrown into the heat of a division rival match up that I don’t believe he is prepared for with this San Francisco defense. A defense that was able to dominate Tony Romo and Nick Foles, two quarterbacks on far better established offenses than Austin Davis.

Running Backs to Start

1) Andre Williams vs. @PHI

Williams will jump into the starting role with the injury to Rashad Jennings. He has scored a touchdown in each of the past two games and Philadelphia is not particularly strong against the run.  The Giants know they will have to get the run game going for Eli to be at his best, so he should have over 20 carries and I don’t see Peyton Hillis interfering with the goal line work unless Williams were to come off the field to get rest on a long drive.

2) Branden Oliver vs. @OAK

After doing what he did to the number 1 ranked run defense last week, he is likely already picked up in your league. If you are the owner, you should be starting him against the winless Raiders. The Chargers are always looking to run the ball early and often, and if they continue to score at the pace they have been scoring, they will also look to run the clock down in the 4th quarter.

3) Bishop Sankey vs. JAC

If you want a risky start pick, this is it. The Jaguars have been bad against the run and running backs who can catch out of the backfield. If Ken Whisenhunt actually wants to involve Sankey as much as he says he does, then what better week than this one.

1) Doug Martin vs. BAL

He has been terrible all year and if you hope for that to change against one of the toughest run defenses in the game, then you are pushing your luck. If there are no other options on your team then you will have to start him. Who knows, maybe Tampa Bay gets to the 1 yard line and he rushes in for a score. That is the best outcome I could see happening for Doug Martin owners, and if that’s what you are hoping for from your starting running back, then you should start scheming up some trades.

2) Chris Ivory vs. DEN

The Jets wont be able to stop this offensive juggernaut. When your starting quarterback is Geno Smith, there is always the possibility of drives being cut short because of turnovers. Denver will dictate every aspect of this game and Chris Johnson will also cut into a portion of  his carries. Andre Ellington was able to make a play against Denver in the passing game last week, but Ivory isn’t the same type of play maker as Ellington. Maybe Ivory has a decent game for ppr leagues, but it will be hard to trust him regardless, especially in standard leagues. In his best receiving game this season, he was 4 for 52 without a touchdown. If you take out what Ellington did in the pass game last week for Arizona, he was 16 for 32 with a touchdown. The touchdown saves him, but Ivory might not be so lucky.

3) Zac Stacy vs. SF

He has not been himself all year and now he has a calf injury. Benny Cunningham looked impressive on the touchdown run last week, so there is the possibility that if he aggravates the injury, he sits the rest of the game and Cunningham takes over. San Francisco has also been tough against the run as they have been in recent years. They had a rough start in their first game against DeMarco Murray but since, have turned it around to be a top 5 fantasy defense against the run and have faced names such as Matt Forte, Jamaal Charles, and Andre Ellington in the process.

Week 1 Top 10 QB/RB

wilson
QB
1)Peyton Manning vs. IND
2)Drew Brees vs. ATL
3) Andrew Luck vs. DEN
4) Matt Stafford vs. NYG
5) Nick Foles vs. JAX
6) Colin Kaepernick vs. DAL
7) Matt Ryan vs. NO
8) Aaron Rodgers vs. SEA
9) Tom Brady vs. MIA
9) Russell Wilson vs. GB
10) Tony Romo vs. SF

Yes, I know, Aaron Rodgers is ranked fairly low, but this match-up scares me because I still haven’t gotten over what they did to Manning in the Superbowl. I truly believe the people ahead of Rodgers will score more than him on this particular week.
Guys like Newton, and Cutler just missed the top 10. I am skeptical of Newton’s apparent injury and
Cutler will have a good game, but maybe not top 10 worthy. Russell Wilson sneaks in for the stellar preseason numbers he’s been putting up. I also like the match-up against Green Bay. I think they can run all over them and then they can have some big plays in the passing game to give Wilson a solid fantasy performance.

RB
1) Jamaal Charles vs. TEN
2) LeSean McCoy vs. JAX
3) Adrian Peterson vs. STL
4) Marshawn Lynch vs. GB
5) Matt Forte vs. BUF
6) Arian Foster vs. WAS
7) Montee Ball vs. IND
8) Alfred Morris vs. HOU
9) DeMarco Murray vs. SF
10) Eddie Lacy vs. SEA

I have Marshawn Lynch ranked a little high just because I think they are going to use him a lot in this game to keep the ball away from Rodgers and the Packers offense. Green Bay is a team that you can run on fairly well so Lynch should have a big game here.
Le’Veon Bell and Giovani Bernard just missed the list because of their week 1 match-ups (Lacy vs. SEA and Bell vs. Cleveland).

Sleepers for Week 1

RB: Chris Johnson vs. OAK
The Jets will love to establish the run and Johnson has been having a great preseason. In his last two games he has ran for 105 yards for a 5.5 YPC. He has also had 2 receptions in each of his preseason games.
QB: Geno Smnith vs. OAK
No, I am not a jets fan, I just think this could be a great game offensively for them. I was very close to picking the quarterback who will be opposing them in Derek Carr.

10 Players to Sell High in Fantasy Baseball

10) Jonathon Lucroy
Right now, Lucroy has the highest batting average among catchers, and the gap is pretty wide. At .324, the next highest is held by Yadier Molina with a .297 BA. Going back to 2012, Lucroy hit .345 in the first half and .299 in the second. While a .299 average isn’t bad, it is still a significant drop off from the first half, and last season, he hit .226 in September. While we still have a ways to go before September hits, it may be time to start thinking bout trading Lucroy while his value is presumably at his highest. Continue reading

10 Takeaways from Mets vs Braves Rubber Match

10) Ike Davis was named the first baseman for the rubber match. He failed to collect a hit, but he did record an RBI and was walked twice. He likely wont see much action in the next series against the Angels. Two lefty’s will pitch against the Mets which should give Josh Satin at least one game in that series, and as Terry Collins has said, Lucas Duda is his starting first baseman.

10) Heading into the game, David Wright and Curtis Granderson were being talked about for not producing at the plate. Wright went 2-4 and was robbed of a hit and RBI by Jason Heyward. Granderson went 0-3 with a walk and is now hitting .138. Continue reading

Mets Projected Stats

These stats can be taken as projections or just goals I would like to see the players achieve. If every player could at least get around these numbers, then the Mets don’t look that bad in 2014.

Lineup
A couple things I would like to see this year are Eric Young Jr. solidifying the leadoff role and Travis d’Arnaud’s progression into a full-time big league catcher. Young will turn 29 in May, so the speedsters window of opportunity for a starting role in the bigs may start to close on him if his batting average and on-base percentage stay under league averages. d’Arnaud will play in his first full season which is exciting for Mets fans. A piece of the future has arrived and it would be nice to see what we have in store for years to come.

Rotation
One of my biggest concerns this season will be the health of Jenrry Mejia. He has a history of injuries and has never pitched over 100 innings in the Majors or the minors. One way or another, I believe we will see Dice-K a few times this season.
Similar to d’Arnaud, I would like to see Zack Wheeler make strides this year. The Mets brought in Colon to replace Harvey, but I don’t think anyone would complain if Wheeler is able to fill in his shoes.
Bartolo Colon

Why Signing Stephen Drew would be Pointless

20140218-234618.jpg

Mets fans are hoping Sandy Alderson picks up another free agent or two while they are still dangling on the market. Most notably, Stephen Drew.

I understand, the team needs a little more talent (ok, maybe a lot more talent) on their big league roster, but signing Drew seems like money is not being used wisely.

First off, Drew has never been an above-average player. His best season in the bigs was in 2008 when he hit .291 with 21 home-runs and a .333 OBP. Since then, he has never hit more than 15 home runs and his highest batting average was .278. On top of that, Drew has been raddled by injuries in the past and his strikeout percentage has been increasing.

It seems ridiculous to pay a guy 14 million.1 million, which is what Scott Boras is asking for, when they have a cheap alternative who is not that much worse.

On top of that, let’s face it, the Mets are not going to make the playoffs this year. Why not wait till next year, when guys like Hanley Ramirez, J.J Hardy, Asdrubal Cabrera, Yunel Escobar, among others, will be free agents. As of right now, I would take any of these guys over Drew.

There is also the potential for the Mets to trade a Bartolo Colon, or maybe even a Daniel Murphy for a shortstop. When the deadline comes closer, and the Mets are inevitably out of the hunt, Colon will be an obvious piece to move since he is clearly not part of the future and could be a great piece for any team playing October baseball.

Signing Drew is not going to make the Mets that much better, and not signing him will not make them that much worse. It’s probably best to save that money for next season, when guys like Zack Wheeler, Noah Syndergaard, Matt Harvey, and Jon Niese will be in the Mets rotation.
